Paco León’s ‘Aida, the Movie’ Gets U.S. Theatrical Release Deal

“Aida, the Movie” Set to Make Waves in the US and Beyond

The highly anticipated spinoff of the popular Spanish TV series “Aida,” aptly titled “Aida, the Movie,” is making its way across the Atlantic next year. This move marks a rare occasion for a broad Spanish comedy to receive a theatrical release in the United States and other key territories.

Wiesner Distribution, a powerhouse in the distribution of Ibero-American cinema celebrating its 25th anniversary, has announced that it will be bringing the ensemble comedy to audiences in the U.S., Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Central American countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Panama on February 6. Partnering with Wiesner Distribution for the U.S. release is Paul Hudson’s Outsider Pictures.

The film initially premiered in Spain on January 30 through Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia. Directed by the talented Paco León, known for his work on projects like “Carmina or Blow Up,” “Kiki, Love to Love,” and the original “Aida” series, the movie reunites León with the beloved cast of the sitcom. Familiar faces such as Carmen Machi, Miren Ibarguren, Mariano Peña, and many others return to bring their characters to the big screen. Additionally, 96 actors were selected through an open casting call on the film’s Instagram account, adding fresh talent to the mix.

“Aida, the Movie” expands on the story of Aída, a single mother navigating the challenges of raising her teenage children in the fictional neighborhood of Esperanza Sur in Madrid. The series originally aired from 2005 to 2014 on Spanish network Telecinco, garnering a dedicated fanbase and launching the careers of its lead actors on an international scale.

Described as a blend of fiction and meta-cinematic storytelling, the film delves into the production of an episode of the series, blurring the lines between reality and fiction as it explores themes like humor, the role of comedians, and the complexities of fame.

Wiesner Distribution and Outsider Pictures have a history of collaborating on U.S. theatrical releases, with upcoming projects including “The Condor’s Daughter,” which recently premiered at TIFF. Cynthia Wiesner, founder and president of Wiesner Distribution, expressed her excitement about bringing “Aida, the Movie” to American audiences, highlighting the universal appeal of the film’s humor and authenticity.

Produced by Globomedia and Telecinco Cinema, with the involvement of Mediaset España and Mediterráneo Mediaset España Group, “Aida, the Movie” promises to be a must-see comedy event. The movie’s stars, Paco León and Carmen Machi, are set to attend the Miami premiere on February 5, adding to the excitement surrounding the film’s release.

With a stellar cast, a unique storytelling approach, and a touch of Spanish charm, “Aida, the Movie” is poised to captivate audiences both in the U.S. and beyond. Don’t miss the chance to experience this cultural phenomenon on the big screen next year.
