Pakistani dating show sparks anger ahead of its debut on YouTube

ISLAMABAD — A new dating show inspired by the popular series “Love Island” has stirred controversy in Pakistan, even though it has not yet aired on television and is only available on YouTube.

The show, called Lazawal Ishq (Eternal Love), is hosted by Pakistani actress Ayesha Omar and is filmed in Istanbul. It follows a similar format to the international hit show “Love Island,” bringing together four Pakistani men and women in a luxurious villa where their interactions are captured on camera. In a country where extramarital relationships are illegal and dating is stigmatized, the show has sparked criticism for being “un-Islamic” and for allegedly promoting Western culture.

Despite public complaints, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has stated that it has no jurisdiction over content on YouTube and cannot take action against the show. Muhammad Tahir, a spokesperson for the authority, emphasized that YouTube falls outside their regulatory scope and that the show is not being broadcast on any licensed television channel.

Ayesha Omar, the host of the show, described it as a groundbreaking project for Pakistani and Urdu-speaking audiences. She promised viewers a mix of love, rivalry, and drama as contestants compete in challenges and form alliances over the course of 100 episodes.

Lazawal Ishq is set to premiere on YouTube on September 29, offering a unique entertainment experience for Pakistani viewers.
