Parents of NC boy killed walking home from grocery store charged

The tragic death of 7-year-old Legend Jenkins in North Carolina has left a community in mourning and his parents facing serious charges. Legend was struck by a car while walking home from a grocery store with his older brother in Gastonia. The incident occurred when Legend ran into traffic and was hit by a 76-year-old woman driving a jeep.
Legend’s parents, Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins, have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child neglect. This decision was made as the investigation revealed that the children were unsupervised at the time of the accident. The parents were arrested and denied permission to attend their son’s funeral, facing a $1.5 million bond each.
The Gastonia Police Department emphasized the importance of adult supervision to ensure a safe environment for children. The driver involved in the accident will not face charges as there was no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on her part.
Witnesses to the tragic event, such as Summer Williams, recounted the heartbreaking scene where Legend was hit after darting into the street. Williams held the dying boy in her arms, trying to comfort him until help arrived. Despite their efforts, Legend succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The community is left reeling from the loss of young Legend, a reminder of the importance of child safety and supervision. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the need for responsible parenting and ensuring the well-being of children in all circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Legend during this difficult time.
