Paris prosecutors raid X offices as part of investigation into child abuse images

French authorities conducted a raid on the offices of a social media platform, X, in Paris as part of an investigation into allegations involving the spread of child sexual abuse images and deepfakes. The billionaire owner, Elon Musk, has been summoned for questioning in connection with the case.

X and Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI are also facing increased scrutiny from the UK’s data privacy regulator for their handling of personal data in relation to Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok.

The investigation, initiated by French prosecutors in January last year, is looking into various charges including the possession and dissemination of pornographic images of minors, sexually explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of automated data processing systems.

Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino have been requested to participate in voluntary interviews on April 20. X employees have also been summoned as witnesses. Yaccarino served as CEO from May 2023 to July 2025.

The Information Commissioner’s Office in Britain is examining whether X and xAI complied with data protection laws and if Grok had safeguards in place to prevent the generation of harmful manipulated images.

The investigation into Grok by the UK media regulator, Ofcom, is ongoing and could take several months to complete.

The European Union has launched an investigation into X following the dissemination of nonconsensual sexualized deepfake images by Grok on the platform. X has previously been fined 120 million euros for violations under the EU’s digital regulations.

SpaceX, Musk’s space exploration company, recently announced the acquisition of xAI, which will also bring together Grok, X, and Starlink, Musk’s satellite communication company.
