Patrol car hit by shrapnel during Marine Corps live-fire demo at celebration attended by JD Vance

A metal shrapnel incident occurred in California during an event attended by Vice President JD Vance. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that the shrapnel from an explosive ordnance struck a law enforcement vehicle near Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base in San Diego County. The incident took place while CHP officers were supporting a traffic break along I-5 on the same day Vance visited Camp Pendleton to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US Marine Corps.

The CHP reported that the shrapnel was fired during a live-fire training demonstration by the US Marine Corps over the freeway, prompting the CHP to stop traffic during the exercise. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and CHP officers alerted the Marine Corps, who then canceled firing additional live ordnance over the freeway.

CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado described the incident as unusual and concerning, emphasizing the importance of safety for the people of California and the officers who protect them. The CHP has filed an internal report and recommended an additional after-action review to improve planning, communication, and coordination for future demonstrations and training events near public roadways.

Camp Pendleton officials are also conducting an investigation after a 155mm artillery round may have detonated outside the designated impact area during the Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration. The demonstration underwent thorough safety evaluations, and firing was suspended following established safety protocols to ensure no injuries occurred.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized President Donald Trump and Vance for putting lives at risk to put on a show during the event. Newsom urged honoring troops by opening the government and paying them. Fox News Digital reached out to Vance’s office for comment on the incident.

Overall, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety during military demonstrations and training exercises to prevent any harm to individuals and property.
