PBS SoCal Leads; KVEA Tops Newscasts

The 2025 L.A. Area Emmy awards were recently held, and PBS SoCal (KOCE/KCET) emerged as the top winner with eight awards. However, Telemundo’s KVEA-TV also had a successful night, winning all three station awards for best newscasts in different time slots.

The prestigious event took place at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and was hosted by Kelvin Washington from Spectrum News 1. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 2025 Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award to Jim Hill for his remarkable career in broadcasting and his contributions as a sportscaster at KCBS/KCAL for over 45 years. The award was presented by former LA Laker star James Worthy.

The event was produced by Bob Bain and Bob Bain Productions and featured various categories covering a wide range of topics such as Live and Breaking News Coverage, Crime and Social Issues, Culture and History, the Arts, Health and Science, Human Interest, Music, Sports, and the Environment.

In terms of total awards won, KVEA and KMEX both secured seven Emmys each, showcasing the strength of L.A.’s top two Spanish-language stations. Following closely behind were KABC-TV and KTLA-TV with three awards each, while Spectrum News 1 and Spectrum SportsNet LA received two awards each.

Some of the notable winners of the night included PBS SoCal for their program “Fast Food and Car Culture” in the L.A. Local Color category, as well as their production “Women of Fire” in the Education/Information category. KMEX-TV also received recognition for their work in categories such as Crime/Social Issues and News Series.

Overall, the 2025 Los Angeles Area Emmy awards celebrated the best in local television programming, highlighting the diverse and talented individuals working in the industry. Congratulations to all the winners for their outstanding contributions to the world of broadcasting.
