‘Peepli Live’ Director Returns With ‘The Great Shamsuddin Family’
Indian filmmaker Anusha Rizvi, known for her critically acclaimed film “Peepli Live,” is making a comeback to feature filmmaking with her latest project, “The Great Shamsuddin Family.” This comedy-drama delves into the complexities of modern Indian family dynamics, offering a humorous yet insightful look into the intricacies of familial relationships.
The film centers around Bani Ahmed, played by Kritika Kamra, a writer faced with a career-defining 12-hour deadline. However, her carefully planned day takes an unexpected turn when her home becomes the epicenter of a family crisis. As Bani’s apartment is inundated with mothers, aunts, cousins, and former flames, each bringing their own set of urgent issues, she must navigate through interfaith tensions, generational clashes, and familial obligations. The narrative unfolds over the course of a single day in Delhi, presenting a snapshot of the chaos and love that define family life.
Director Anusha Rizvi expressed that the film goes beyond mere interruptions, delving into how family, despite its challenges, shapes individuals in profound ways. She hopes that audiences will see reflections of their own family members in the characters portrayed on screen, resonating with the universal experiences of familial bonds.
Kritika Kamra described her character, Bani, as the eldest daughter in a middle-class family who prioritizes the needs of others over her own aspirations. Despite her desire to focus on her own future, Bani finds herself constantly putting her family first, embodying the selflessness and responsibility often associated with eldest siblings.
For Shreya Dhanwanthary, who plays Bani’s impulsive younger sister, the film offered a departure from her usual serious roles, allowing her to explore the comedic side of storytelling. The ensemble cast, which includes Purab Kohli, Farida Jalal, and Juhi Babbar, adds depth and nuance to the narrative, bringing to life a range of characters with their unique quirks and challenges.
Set against the backdrop of a single location, “The Great Shamsuddin Family” creates an intimate yet entertaining world where humor, conflicts, and emotions intertwine under one roof. Purab Kohli highlighted the film’s ability to reflect typical Indian family dynamics, making it relatable and heartwarming for audiences.
“The Great Shamsuddin Family” is set to premiere on Dec. 12 on JioHotstar, India’s leading streaming platform, offering viewers a glimpse into the chaotic yet endearing world of family relationships. Stay tuned for this heartfelt comedy-drama that promises to strike a chord with audiences of all backgrounds.
