According to a new report by investment platform AJ Bell and pollster Opinium, British adults are engaging in “secret spending” on items like beauty products, gambling, and cryptocurrencies without informing their partners. The survey of 4,000 adults revealed that more than half of individuals in relationships have made undisclosed purchases.

On average, men spent £2,545 secretly in the past year, while women spent an average of £1,769 without their partner’s knowledge.

Key Findings:

  • Clothing was the most common secret purchase for both men (20%) and women (35%).
  • Beauty products were a popular undisclosed purchase among women, with a quarter admitting to secretly buying them.
  • Men often spent secretly on vices like cigarettes and alcohol, with 19% making undisclosed purchases.
  • Younger adults in the Gen Z category spent an average of £4,303 secretly, compared to just £384 spent by those over 55.

Laura Suter, AJ Bell’s personal finance director, cautioned that secret spending could lead to financial issues within relationships, hindering proper budgeting and long-term financial planning. She emphasized the importance of open communication about major expenses to avoid conflicts.

Finance expert Iona Bain suggested that maintaining some financial independence in relationships is wise, but hiding spending can stem from a lack of honesty about values and priorities. She stressed the importance of transparency in financial matters, especially when planning major life events like buying a home or starting a family.

Overall, the report highlights the significance of open dialogue and transparency in managing finances within relationships to ensure financial stability and harmony.
