The Teen Who Fell 50 Feet Down a NYC Bridge Shaft While Filming a TikTok Prank
A 16-year-old boy found himself in a harrowing situation on Monday night when a TikTok prank gone wrong resulted in him plunging 50 feet down a bridge shaft in New York City. The incident led to a dramatic rescue operation involving over 70 firefighters and first responders.
After being hoisted to safety, the teen was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition. Fortunately, he is now stable and recovering, according to FDNY officials.
Dramatic images captured the moment the boy was lifted from the shaft on one of the buttresses of the Queensboro Bridge during the rescue mission. The rescue operation was described as a confined-space operation, requiring high-angle equipment, ropes, air monitoring, and creating high points, as explained by FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado.
Firefighter Khalid Lee, who was part of the rescue team, recounted the adrenaline and intensity of the situation, emphasizing the training that prepared them for such emergencies.
It took some time for crews to locate the boy, with the discovery of a shoe and blood at the scene guiding their efforts. The rescue involved using high-angle equipment and ropes to safely extract the teen from the shaft.
Reports suggested that the boy was climbing the bridge with friends before they abandoned him following the fall. The exact circumstances of how he ended up in the shaft remain unclear.
Notably, this incident has raised concerns about the prevalence of potentially dangerous stunts on social media platforms like TikTok. Authorities and parents alike are urged to be vigilant and educate young individuals about the risks associated with such challenges.
