Pickleball is just getting started in China

Sports club Suzhou Shishan made headlines in January 2024 by opening the first pickleball court in the city of Suzhou, China. The move marked the beginning of a new era for the sport in the country, as interest in pickleball continues to grow exponentially.

According to WPIC Marketing + Technologies, online sales of pickleball equipment in China have surged to an average of $1.2 million in monthly sales as of July 2024, a significant increase compared to the previous year. This rise in popularity can be attributed to the increasing trend of active lifestyles and recreational sports participation in China, as highlighted by Jacob Cooke, CEO of WPIC.

The influence of social media influencers and the success of Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen, who won China’s first Olympic gold medal in tennis singles, have also contributed to the growing interest in racquet sports like pickleball in China. The resurgence of tennis in the country has further fueled the enthusiasm for similar sports like pickleball.

Daniel Zipser, a senior partner at McKinsey, noted that the interest in tennis and pickleball in China has been on the rise since 2023 and continues to gain momentum in 2024. Not only are more people actively participating in the sport, but there is also a growing audience for professional pickleball games in the region.

The recent “Hong Kong Open” organized by the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) saw a significant turnout, with a large crowd attending the final matches. The success of the event indicates the growing popularity of pickleball in Asia, with more tournaments and competitions planned in the future.

In terms of business implications, the growth of pickleball in China presents both challenges and opportunities for businesses looking to tap into this emerging market. Local businesses are capitalizing on the trend by building pickleball courts and organizing tournaments, creating a profitable venture in the process.

Despite the potential for growth, foreign brands and organizations may face obstacles in entering the Chinese market due to language barriers and the unique WeChat ecosystem. However, the early stages of the market present opportunities for businesses to establish themselves as key players in the industry.

Overall, the surge in consumer spending on pickleball and other sports in China reflects a shift towards active lifestyles and recreational activities. With an optimistic outlook on consumer spending in the coming years, the pickleball industry is poised for continued growth and success in China. The sun was shining brightly as I made my way to the local park. I could hear the birds chirping happily and the sound of children playing in the distance. It was the perfect day to be outside and enjoy the fresh air.

As I reached the park, I noticed how vibrant and colorful everything looked. The flowers were in full bloom, and the grass was a lush green. The trees provided a cool shade, and the gentle breeze was refreshing.

I decided to take a walk around the park and take in all the beauty that surrounded me. I passed by a group of friends having a picnic, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Further along, I saw a couple sitting on a bench, lost in conversation. It was heartwarming to see people connecting with each other in such a peaceful setting.

I then came across a group of children playing on the playground. They were running around, climbing on the jungle gym, and swinging on the swings. Their laughter filled the air, and it was contagious. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched them having the time of their lives.

As I continued my walk, I noticed a man sitting on a bench, reading a book. He looked so content and at peace, completely engrossed in his reading. It was a reminder of how important it is to take time for ourselves and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

I found a spot on the grass and sat down, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. The sun’s warmth on my face, the gentle rustle of the leaves, and the distant sounds of laughter all combined to create a sense of serenity and calm.

The park was truly a haven of tranquility and beauty, a place where people could come together to relax, connect with nature, and enjoy the simple joys of life. As I sat there, basking in the peaceful atmosphere, I felt grateful for this moment of respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I made a mental note to visit the park more often, to soak up its beauty and tranquility, and to appreciate the simple pleasures that it offered. In a world that was often chaotic and stressful, the park was a sanctuary of peace and serenity, a place where one could find solace and rejuvenation.
