Belgian Authorities Foil Jihadi-Style Attack Plot

Police in Belgium have detained three individuals suspected of planning a jihadi-style attack on the country’s politicians. The suspects were apprehended after authorities discovered a homemade bomb in one of their homes, according to federal prosecutors.

During the investigation, law enforcement officials found an improvised explosive device at the residence of one suspect, although it was not functional at the time. Additionally, a bag of steel balls and a 3D printer believed to be used in the construction of parts for the planned attack were uncovered during the searches.

According to prosecutors, there were indications that the group intended to build a drone to carry out the attack. The three suspects, all residents of Antwerp, were taken into custody following searches of their homes authorized by an anti-terrorism judge.

The raids were part of an ongoing probe into potential terrorist activities, including attempted terrorist murder and participation in a terrorist organization. Authorities suspect that the plot was inspired by jihadist ideology and targeted at politicians, although specific individuals were not named.

While the suspects were described as young adults born in the early 2000s, their identities have not been disclosed. Two of them were still being interrogated by authorities, with one released pending further investigation.

The incident comes at a time when Belgian law enforcement is facing mounting challenges, including recent shootings in Brussels and drug-related crime in Antwerp. The justice system is under strain due to a shortage of personnel and resources, prompting calls for increased support from the government.

With a rise in terrorism investigations this year, authorities emphasize the need for adequate capacity to ensure public safety. The memories of past attacks, such as the 2016 bombings in Brussels that claimed 32 lives, underscore the importance of vigilance in combating extremist threats.
