Pope Francis live updates: Pope Francis lies in state, thousands wait to pay respects

Cardinal Canizares Llovera Will Not Travel to Rome for Pope Francis’ Funeral

Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, Archbishop of Madrid, has confirmed that he will not be able to travel to Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis due to health reasons. This also means that he will not be able to participate in the upcoming conclave to elect the next Pope.

At 79 years old, Cardinal Canizares Llovera is eligible to vote in the conclave, but his health concerns prevent him from doing so.

This news comes shortly after Cardinal Vinko Puljić also announced that he would not be participating in the conclave due to health reasons.

Cardinal Canizares Llovera is one of five Spanish cardinals who have the privilege of voting in the conclave.

Out of the 252 total cardinals, only 135 are eligible to vote for the next Pope. With two cardinals now unable to participate due to health issues, there are 133 cardinals left to elect the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.
