Popular Brooklyn BBQ restaurant fights back against steep delivery app commissions

Restaurant Takes on Delivery Apps with Direct Ordering

Many restaurant owners are frustrated with the high commissions charged by delivery services like DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats. One popular New York City eatery, Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbecue, is leading the way in fighting back against these fees.

Morgan’s, known for its Texas-style dry-rub grilling, is urging customers to place orders through the restaurant’s website and app rather than through third-party services. Owner Matthew Glazier has seen a significant increase in direct orders since implementing this strategy, with the goal of reaching 50% in the future.

Despite attempts to negotiate lower fees with delivery app companies, Glazier found no success. While still utilizing Uber Eats and Grubhub, Morgan’s is prioritizing direct customer orders.

Glazier explained, “When people place orders through our site or the app, the information goes to Uber Eats or DoorDash, which handle deliveries for us. They charge us a $3.99 fee, but it’s much less than 30%.”

Morgan’s, renowned for its barbecue offerings, has adapted to a higher demand for delivery during the pandemic, shifting from a primarily dine-in business to a significant portion of take-out and delivery orders.

Glazier emphasized the importance of meeting customers where they are, stating, “The barbecue found its audience long before the delivery radius did. We’re just catching up.”

While DoorDash and Uber Eats have not responded to requests for comment, Morgan’s continues to innovate and prioritize direct customer orders to reduce reliance on third-party delivery services.
