Postal worker Grinch caught on camera stealing Christmas gift cards from Long Island post office: DA

A Long Island postal worker has been accused of stealing over 20 gift cards from the Oakdale post office during the holiday season. Jovanni Jamison-Lewis, 35, allegedly took the gift cards from packages that were supposed to be mailed out and used them for her own benefit, according to authorities.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office stated that Jamison-Lewis was caught on camera going through packages at the post office and specifically targeting envelopes containing gift cards. She was later seen using some of the stolen gift cards at various stores.

The scheme was uncovered in September when a stolen gift card was used, leading to a two-month investigation by Suffolk police and the postal service’s Office of the Inspector General. Investigators observed Jamison-Lewis opening envelopes, taking valuable items, and resealing them.

In a sting operation, undercover officers placed a gift card in an envelope and handed it to Jamison-Lewis. Surveillance footage captured her opening the envelope after the officer left, taking the gift card, and using it at a store the following day.

Jamison-Lewis was arrested on November 24 as she was leaving work. Stolen mail, gift cards, and cash were found in her possession, along with additional stolen gift cards in her car and home.

She has been charged with grand larceny, possession of stolen property, official misconduct, and larceny. Despite facing up to four years in prison if convicted, she was released as the charges are not bail-eligible under state law.

Suffolk County DA Ray Tierney expressed disappointment in the actions of a few bad actors tarnishing the reputation of hardworking public servants. Jamison-Lewis, who started working at the post office in November 2024, resigned on December 1.

The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges expected. However, it is unlikely that federal charges will be brought against Jamison-Lewis. Authorities have not disclosed the total value of the stolen gift cards.
