‘Pulse,’ ‘The Residence’ Canceled at Netflix After One Season Each
Pulse and The Residence Canceled After One Season on Netflix
Variety has reported that freshman Netflix shows “Pulse” and “The Residence” have both been canceled after just one season. Both series failed to garner enough viewership to justify a renewal for a second season.
“Pulse” debuted on April 3 and initially attracted 6.5 million views on the Netflix Top 10 list. However, the viewership numbers declined in subsequent weeks, with the series receiving mixed reviews from critics. The show’s Rotten Tomatoes rating of 48% highlighted issues with the narrative structure, depiction of sexual harassment, and unlikable characters.
One of the contributing factors to the show’s cancellation was the competition from another medical drama, “The Pitt,” which received more positive feedback from both critics and audiences.
“Pulse” followed the story of Dr. Danny Simms, played by Willa Fitzgerald, as she navigates her new role as a resident at a Level 1 trauma center in Miami. The series explores the challenges faced by the hospital staff during a hurricane-induced lockdown, with personal and professional conflicts adding to the tension.
The ensemble cast of “Pulse” included Justina Machado, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, and others, with Zoe Robyn and Carlton Cuse serving as creators and executive producers.
“The Residence,” produced by Shondaland, also faced cancellation after its first season. Despite a strong debut with 6.4 million views, the show failed to maintain its momentum on the Netflix English TV Top 10 list. However, it received better critical acclaim compared to “Pulse,” with an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the book by Kate Andersen Brower, “The Residence” offered a unique take on a murder mystery set in the White House. The series followed an eccentric detective as he investigates a suspicious death among the staff of the presidential mansion.
Paul William Davies helmed “The Residence” as creator, showrunner, and executive producer, with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers also serving as executive producers.
