Qualcomm Confirms Snapdragon 8s Series is Scrapped
This Year’s Snapdragon Summit Unveils New Mobile Chips
At this year’s Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm made some significant announcements regarding their latest mobile processors. Alongside the highly anticipated Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the company also introduced a new addition to their lineup – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, aimed at more budget-friendly devices.
During a Q&A session at the event, Alex Katouzian, Group General Manager of Mobile, Compute, & XR (MCX), revealed that the Snapdragon 8s series will no longer be part of Qualcomm’s product offerings. Instead, the 8s range will be integrated into the 8 Gen series.
“The 8s is going to evolve into the 8 Gen, so we have the 8 Elite and the 8 Gen,” explained Katouzian. This decision comes after feedback from customers indicated a preference for a premium experience across all tiers rather than a sub-tier option.
While the naming convention may have been a bit confusing in the past, this move simplifies Qualcomm’s flagship 8 series, with Elite chips designated for top-tier devices and the regular version for more affordable models with slightly scaled-back performance.
Although the exact release date for devices featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be in the near future. The Xiaomi 17 range is set to be among the first devices to launch with the 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.
Conclusion
The Snapdragon Summit was a platform for Qualcomm to showcase their latest advancements in mobile technology. With the introduction of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and the consolidation of the Snapdragon 8s series into the 8 Gen lineup, Qualcomm is streamlining their product offerings to provide a better experience for users across different price points.
