R. Madhavan, Rajkummar Rao Lead Netflix India Films at Tokyo Event

Netflix Unveils Three Indian Productions at APAC Showcase
Netflix recently showcased its commitment to diverse Indian storytelling at its APAC showcase in Tokyo, unveiling three upcoming Indian productions set for release in 2025. Leading the slate of titles are popular actors Rajkummar Rao and R. Madhavan.
During the presentation, Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, head of Netflix India original films, emphasized the streaming platform’s emphasis on showcasing a variety of Indian stories across languages and genres. Sheikh expressed excitement about the upcoming lineup, stating, “This year is going to be our most diverse year yet, with a mix of theatrical films in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.”
Currently available for streaming is “Test,” Netflix’s first Tamil-language original film, a sports drama featuring R. Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth. Additionally, the imminent release of “Jewel Thief,” described as a high-octane heist-action film starring Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat, was also highlighted during the showcase.
Three upcoming productions were announced at the event. “Aap Jaisa Koi” (Someone Like You) stars R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Sheikh in a heartwarming romantic drama set in Kolkata. “Inspector Zende,” featuring Manoj Bajpayee and Jim Sarbh, is inspired by true events and follows the story of an ordinary cop pursuing a notorious criminal in the 1980s. Lastly, “Toaster,” Rajkummar Rao’s latest comedy from KAMPA Films, features an ensemble cast in a story of murder and mayhem triggered by a wedding gift.
Sheikh also highlighted the success of recent Netflix Indian films like “Amar Singh Chamkila,” “Maharaja,” and “Laapata Ladies,” which have resonated with global audiences and broken cultural barriers.
During a conversation with Sheikh, Rajkummar Rao discussed the inception of KAMPA Films and his approach to comedy. He shared, “We were in Goa on a holiday when a friend suggested we start producing films. As for comedy, I try not to force humor but rather be controlled and authentic in my performance.”
Netflix’s growing commitment to Indian films was underscored by Sheikh, who mentioned that nearly half of the platform’s viewing in India is from films, making it one of the highest globally. She also noted that Indian films have consistently featured in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) list each week over the past year.
