Raise the Age is ruining the lives of New York’s kids
The consequences of Raise the Age legislation are becoming increasingly apparent, with cases like that of Julian Turner highlighting the dangers of allowing young offenders to continue on a path of crime without facing proper consequences. Turner, at just 17 years old, has already amassed a shocking 20 arrests, showcasing the failure of the system to deter him from a life of criminal behavior.
Turner’s criminal history began at the tender age of 10, with a fake gun incident that quickly escalated to violent acts, including stabbing a woman and later being arrested for attempted murder. Despite these serious offenses, Raise the Age legislation has allowed Turner to repeatedly evade significant punishment, culminating in his recent arrest for armed robbery and possession of a loaded gun with a defaced serial number.
The impact of Raise the Age can be seen in the alarming rise in teen violence, with a 96% increase in shootings involving individuals under 18 since the legislation was implemented. This surge in youth crime underscores the failure of the system to effectively address the root causes of criminal behavior and rehabilitate young offenders.
It is clear that a more proactive approach is needed to address the issue of youth crime. By holding young offenders accountable for their actions and providing appropriate interventions and support, we can prevent them from becoming entrenched in a cycle of criminal behavior. The current system, which allows individuals like Turner to continue on a path of violence without facing meaningful consequences, only perpetuates the cycle of crime and victimization.
It is time for lawmakers to reevaluate Raise the Age legislation and implement reforms that prioritize accountability, rehabilitation, and prevention. By addressing the underlying issues that contribute to youth crime and providing young offenders with the support they need to turn their lives around, we can create a safer and more just society for all.
