Rangers trade Dane Dunning to Braves as MLB trade deadline looms

The Atlanta Braves have made a significant move to bolster their pitching rotation by acquiring right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning from the Texas Rangers. In exchange for Dunning, the Braves sent journeyman reliever José Ruiz and cash considerations to the Rangers. The trade was announced on Thursday night.

Dunning, who was part of the Rangers’ World Series-winning team in 2023, had a standout season that year with a 3.70 ERA in 26 starts during the regular season. He also made six postseason appearances, solidifying his reputation as a reliable pitcher. However, Dunning struggled in the following season, posting a 5.31 ERA in 95 innings. This year, he has only pitched 10.2 innings, mostly in relief, spending the majority of his time in the minor leagues.

The Braves made room for Dunning on their 40-man roster by designating veteran reliever Jesse Chavez for assignment. With key pitchers like Chris Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach, Reynaldo López, and AJ Smith-Shawver unavailable, Dunning will have an opportunity to compete for a spot in the starting rotation.

On the other side of the trade, the Rangers acquired José Ruiz, a seasoned reliever who has pitched a total of 16.1 innings this season split between the Phillies and the Braves. Ruiz had a successful stint with the Phillies last year, boasting a 3.71 ERA in 51 innings with 52 strikeouts. Before joining the Phillies, he also played for the Diamondbacks in 2024 and spent five years with the White Sox.

The trade comes just two weeks before the MLB trade deadline on July 31. Despite speculation that the Braves could be sellers, the team’s acquisition of Dunning signals their intent to remain competitive. Currently, the Braves have a record of 42-53 and are 9.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
