Rap festival near the Arctic Ocean delights crowds under the midnight sun

UTSJOKI, Finland — Performing well into the night at an open-air music festival in the Finnish village of Utsjoki, Mihkku Laiti took the stage under the glow of Lapland’s famous midnight sun. Despite the late hour, the audience of more than 300 enjoyed his rap performance in the native Sámi language, a key element of Utsjoki’s Indigenous culture.

Laiti, also known as “Yungmiqu,” founded the Loktafeasta rap festival to showcase Sámi traditions and language. Through his music, he aims to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the everyday life of the Sámi people.

The festival, which featured performances in both Sámi and Finnish, highlighted the unique blend of modernity and tradition in Sámi culture. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, and live music against the backdrop of the Arctic landscape.

Despite historical oppression, the Sámi people are reclaiming their cultural identity and language rights. Loktafeasta served as a platform for artists like Laiti to share their stories and connect with audiences from diverse backgrounds.

As the midnight sun illuminated the festival grounds, the fusion of hip hop, tango, and traditional Sámi music created a unique experience for all in attendance. Laiti’s message of joy and unity through music transcended language barriers and resonated with the universal language of music.
