Rapper Sean Kingston gets 3.5 year prison sentence for $1 million fraud scheme

Rapper Sean Kingston, whose real name is Kisean Paul Anderson, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for his involvement in a $1 million fraud scheme in South Florida. Alongside his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, Kingston was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud earlier this year. Turner was sentenced to five years in prison last month by U.S. Judge David Leibowitz.

The judge ordered a restitution hearing to be held within 90 days and Kingston’s sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. Immediately after the sentencing, Kingston was taken into custody.

The charges stemmed from a scheme where Kingston used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to arrange purchases of high-end merchandise. He would negotiate deals with sellers, invite them to his Florida homes, promise to feature them and their products on social media, and then send fake wire receipts for the luxury items, including a bulletproof Escalade, watches, and a 19-foot LED TV.

When victims realized the funds never cleared, they would contact Kingston or Turner for payment, often resorting to legal action or law enforcement intervention to receive any compensation.

Kingston, 35, and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team raided Kingston’s rented mansion in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Turner was taken into custody during the raid, while Kingston was arrested at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California, where he was performing.

Born in Florida and raised in Jamaica, Kingston rose to fame at the age of 17 with his 2007 hit “Beautiful Girls,” which sampled Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” His other popular songs include “Take You There” and “Fire Burning.”

The sentencing of Kingston and his mother marks the end of a legal battle that has tarnished the reputation of the once-popular rapper. The case serves as a reminder that fraudulent activities, especially those involving large sums of money, have serious consequences.
