Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) Hands-On: The New Benchmark for Smart Glasses
Meta’s Ray-Ban smartglasses have taken the wearable market by storm since their launch in October 2023, with over two million units sold and high-profile appearances at events like the Oscars and Paris Fashion Week. As a user of the first-gen Meta Ray-Ban smartglasses, I have found them to be incredibly convenient and useful, thanks to their seamless integration of technology and easy access to features like a camera, audio playback, and AI assistant.
When I was invited to preview the new sets of smartglasses debuting at Meta Connect 2025, I was eager to see what improvements were in store. The new Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) smartglasses, while not as flashy as the Meta Oakley Vanguard shades or the Meta Ray-Ban Display, offer a range of welcome enhancements that elevate the user experience.
One of the standout features of the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) is the longer battery life, thanks to new “steelcan” batteries that provide up to 5 hours of continuous audio playback or 8 hours of mixed use. Additionally, the new smartglasses boast a total of 56 hours of battery life with a 50% fast-charge in just 20 minutes.
The video capture capabilities of the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) have also been improved, with the 12Mp camera now capable of capturing 3K video at 30fps. The addition of slow motion and hyperlapse video modes adds even more versatility to the smartglasses, accessible through the Meta AI app.
Enhancements to audio performance, including a wind-noise reduction algorithm, make for clearer calls and better voice command recognition. Live Translation now supports German and Portuguese languages, and a new feature called Conversation Focus isolates the voice of the person you’re listening to, making it easier to hear them in noisy environments.
Style-wise, the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) offers three frame styles to choose from, each with multiple frame and lens combinations. Limited-run seasonal color options add a touch of exclusivity to the lineup.
The Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) launched alongside Meta Connect 2025 with a starting price of £379/$379/€419. The previous generation Meta Ray-Bans will continue to be available at a lower price for those who don’t need the latest features.
Overall, the upgrades to the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) may not be revolutionary, but they enhance an already impressive product. The improved battery life, camera capabilities, and audio enhancements make these smartglasses a compelling option for tech-savvy users. I look forward to seeing how these enhancements impact the user experience and how Meta continues to evolve the platform in the future.
