Refugee groups worry about backlash after shooting of National Guard soldiers in DC

Amidst the recent tragic shooting incident involving an Afghan national in Seattle, concerns have been raised by those working with refugees about potential backlash against the Afghan community. Shawn VanDiver, president of the San Diego-based group #AfghanEvac, which assists in resettling Afghans who supported the U.S. during the war, expressed deep concern over the situation. VanDiver emphasized that the actions of one individual should not be used to stereotype an entire community.

The suspect in the shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, had a background working with a special CIA-backed Afghan Army unit before immigrating to the U.S. He had applied for asylum during the Biden administration and his application was approved after a thorough vetting process. Despite this, President Donald Trump has called for a review of individuals who entered the country under the previous administration.

Refugee advocacy groups are calling for a fair and thorough investigation into the incident while also stressing the importance of not painting an entire community with the same brush. Ambassador Ashraf Haidari of Displaced International highlighted the need for justice for the victims but cautioned against unfairly targeting innocent individuals based on the actions of one person.
