Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will resign from Congress in January

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene shocked the political world on Friday by announcing her resignation from Congress effective January 5, 2026. This decision comes just a week after former President Donald Trump withdrew his support for Greene, one of his staunchest allies, following her public criticism of his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and other issues.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Greene addressed her recent fallout with Trump, stating, “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked, and used by rich powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for.” She emphasized her commitment to her values and family, expressing her reluctance to subject her district to a divisive primary election.

The rift between Greene and Trump deepened when she signed a discharge petition to release the full Epstein files, prompting Trump to label her as a “ranting Lunatic” who had “gone Far Left.” Despite the public disagreement, Greene remained steadfast in her beliefs, asserting that her self-worth is defined by God, not by any political figure.

In a video accompanying her resignation statement, Greene emphasized her dedication to the American people and her willingness to stand by them in the face of political challenges. Trump, in response to her resignation, expressed that it was “great news for the country” and wished her well, indicating that he had no intention of engaging with her further.

Greene, who has been a prominent figure in the MAGA movement, hinted at the possibility of returning to elected office in the future while recognizing the power of ordinary Americans in shaping the country’s future. Her departure will impact the balance of power in the House of Representatives, with Speaker Mike Johnson set to regain a slim majority following a special election in Tennessee.

Kentucky GOP Rep. Thomas Massie, a vocal critic of Trump, commended Greene for her honesty and integrity in a social media post, reflecting on the significance of her decision. As Greene prepares to leave Congress, the political landscape is poised for change, with implications for both the Republican Party and the broader American public.
