Republicans demand FBI records after call logs seized during Biden admin’s Arctic Frost probe

A group of eighteen Republicans has demanded the release of FBI records related to the Arctic Frost investigation conducted during the Biden administration. This demand comes after nine of the lawmakers were recently informed that the FBI had obtained their call logs from 2021 without their knowledge. The GOP lawmakers, led by Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson, have requested all communications related to Arctic Frost involving the FBI, Department of Justice, members of the Biden White House, and former special counsel Jack Smith’s office.

The FBI reportedly obtained phone metadata, including call logs, from the members of Congress as part of the investigation into 2020 election meddling. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino informed the lawmakers that their call logs from January 4 to 7, 2021, were obtained and are subject to federal grand jury secrecy requirements. The Republicans are seeking information on the legal processes followed, any additional surveillance methods used, and whether subpoenas were issued to cell phone carriers.

The letter sent by the eighteen Republicans, including members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, expressed concern about the Biden administration’s alleged weaponization of the federal government and called for transparency in the investigation. Senator Grassley described the FBI’s actions as “arguably worse than Watergate” and called for accountability for those involved in the wrongdoing.

The investigation, known as Arctic Frost, targeted not only the lawmakers but also other individuals and groups connected to the GOP, including former President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. The FBI whistleblowers have alleged that phone data of various individuals was obtained, including late conservative figure Charlie Kirk. Additionally, Congressman Scott Perry was reportedly surveilled by FBI agents before having his phone seized as part of the Arctic Frost probe.

The charges stemming from the Arctic Frost investigation were brought against former President Trump in August 2024 for allegedly attempting to reverse Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. The Republicans involved in the letter to the FBI include Senators Johnson, Lindsey Graham, Bill Hagerty, Josh Hawley, Dan Sullivan, Tommy Tuberville, Cynthia Lummis, and Marsha Blackburn, as well as Congressman Mike Kelly.

FBI Director Kash Patel has vowed to deliver truth and accountability and ensure that the FBI is not weaponized against the American people under his leadership. The Republicans are pushing for complete transparency in the investigation and for those responsible for the alleged abuses of power to be held accountable.
