Retired banker ‘shocked’ at being falsely ID’d as Charlie Kirk assassin
A retired banker from Canada, Michael Mallinson, recently found himself in the midst of a nightmare after being wrongly identified online as the assassin of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. Despite being thousands of miles away at home in Toronto, Mallinson was shocked to discover that social media posts were circulating with his name and photo as the alleged sniper responsible for Kirk’s murder at Utah Valley University.
The false information seems to have originated from a fake X account and quickly spread as people scrambled to identify the killer. Mallinson was not only misidentified but was also labeled as a “far left extremist” and even “pure evil” in some posts. One particularly damaging claim that he was a registered Democrat garnered over 3 million views, fueling rampant speculation and outrage.
As the social media frenzy escalated, Mallinson began receiving hateful messages on Facebook, accusing him of heinous acts. Concerned for his safety and reputation, the retired banker contacted local authorities and took steps to minimize his online presence, which proved challenging as his advocacy work for arthritis patients requires him to be active on social media.
Considering legal action against those responsible for spreading the false rumor, Mallinson expressed his hope that the news cycle would soon move on. However, he remained wary of potential repercussions in the future if the misinformation resurfaced. Meanwhile, the actual suspect in Kirk’s shooting remained at large, with two individuals initially detained and later released.
The ordeal serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of misinformation and the speed at which false narratives can spread online. Mallinson’s experience highlights the need for vigilance in verifying information before sharing it and the potential consequences of jumping to conclusions based on unverified sources. As he navigates the aftermath of being wrongly identified as a killer, Mallinson hopes to clear his name and move past this distressing chapter.
