Rio Carnival street party dogs parade as humans protest against pet killers

RIO DE JANEIRO — Many dogs in fancy costumes gathered at a popular street party during the Rio de Janeiro Carnival to protest against animal cruelty. Dressed as alligators, fairies, and superheroes, the canines enjoyed samba music, delicious breakfast treats, and made new friends at the Blocao event.

Around 300 people and their pets came together in Barra da Tijuca, singing and dancing to traditional Carnival songs. Despite the hot weather, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), the dogs were well taken care of by their owners.

The Blocao organizer, Marco Antonio Marinho, emphasized the importance of including dogs in the festivities, as they are considered part of the family. The event, which has been a tradition for over 20 years, aims to spread joy and love among pet owners and their furry companions.

In a tribute to a dog named Orelha, who was tragically killed in a recent incident that sparked national outrage, participants waved white ribbons and sang songs. The incident led to calls for justice and awareness about the need to protect animals from harm.

The Blocao event serves as a platform for advocating against animal cruelty and promoting responsible pet ownership. It is a heartwarming celebration of the bond between humans and their beloved pets, showcasing the love and compassion that exist within the community.
