Rob McElhenney Explains His Legal Name Change to Rob Mac

Rob McElhenney, known for his role in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” recently announced that he will be officially changing his name to “Rob Mac.” In a video shared on social media, the 48-year-old actor explained that the decision to shorten his name was mainly for practical reasons. He expressed frustration over the constant misspelling and mispronunciation of his last name, which has consumed a significant amount of his time over the years.

While acknowledging that the name change may come across as “kind of douchey,” McElhenney emphasized that there is a lot of family history behind his last name, rooted in Irish heritage. However, he revealed that the spelling of the name has evolved over generations, with his great-great-grandmother’s last name being spelled as “McIlhenny.” He highlighted that his ancestors did not choose the current spelling, as it was given to them by a government official.

Despite the historical significance of his last name, McElhenney decided to simplify things by adopting the moniker “Rob Mac.” He pointed out that many people already refer to him by that nickname and that his family’s love and acceptance are what truly matter to him. The actor humorously suggested alternative names that people could call him, but ultimately, he encouraged everyone to give “Rob Mac” a try.

In a recent interview with Variety, McElhenney confirmed that he had filed legal documents to officially change his name to “Rob Mac.” His wife, Kaitlin Olson, shared that their children were not thrilled about the name change, as they also have the same last name. However, they are slowly adjusting to the idea.

The couple, who met on the set of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” in 2005 and later tied the knot, have a unique love story that has captured the hearts of fans. As they navigate this new chapter with McElhenney’s name change, their bond remains strong.

As McElhenney embarks on this new journey as “Rob Mac,” fans can continue to enjoy his work on screen, including his latest project, “Welcome to Wrexham.” The actor’s decision to simplify his name reflects his desire for a fresh start and a more streamlined identity in both his personal and professional life.
