Rock band with more than 1 million Spotify listeners reveals it’s entirely AI-generated — down to the musicians themselves

The music industry was taken by storm when a new rock band, the Velvet Sundown, emerged on the scene and quickly gained one million listeners on Spotify. Fans were captivated by the band’s debut album, “Floating on Echoes,” which featured catchy tunes and thought-provoking lyrics.

However, it was soon revealed that the Velvet Sundown was not your typical rock band. In fact, it was entirely generated by artificial intelligence. The band’s photos and album cover featured AI-generated images, with unnaturally smooth and matte textures. The guitarist’s hand even had fused fingers, a telltale sign of AI manipulation.

Despite the lack of human involvement, the Velvet Sundown’s music struck a chord with listeners. Their pro-peace folk rock song, “Dust on the Wind,” topped Spotify’s daily “Viral 50” chart in multiple countries. The band released two albums in June alone, with another set for mid-July, showcasing their ability to churn out music at an alarming rate.

The band finally came clean about their AI origins, updating their Spotify biography to reflect the truth. They explained that the Velvet Sundown was a “synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced, and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence.” This revelation sparked a debate about the boundaries of authorship and the future of music in the age of AI.

Some individuals tried to take advantage of the Velvet Sundown’s viral success by posing as representatives for the band. A web safety expert from Quebec even fabricated information about the band to Rolling Stone magazine before admitting to his deception.

As the music industry grapples with the rise of AI-generated content, platforms like YouTube have taken steps to address the issue. Starting on July 15, YouTube announced that it would cut monetization for any content produced by AI. This decision came after backlash against popular YouTuber Mr. Beast, who had introduced a tool that used AI to create video thumbnails.

It remains to be seen how the Velvet Sundown’s revelation will impact their future in the music industry. Will fans continue to support a band that is entirely artificial? Or will the allure of human creativity prevail in the end? Only time will tell.
