A tragic incident unfolded at Old Dominion University when a gunman opened fire, resulting in the death of an instructor and injuries to two others. The suspect, identified as Mohamed Jalloh, a former Army National Guardsman with ties to ISIS, was allegedly attempting a terrorist attack. Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) students bravely intervened to subdue and neutralize the suspect, ultimately ending the threat.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Dominique Evans confirmed that the shooting is being treated as an act of terrorism, with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force collaborating with local law enforcement on the investigation. The incident took place in Constant Hall, an academic building on campus, and the suspect was found deceased shortly after police arrived on the scene. The victim, Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, was a respected ROTC instructor and a veteran Army aviator.

Lt. Col. Shah’s commitment to service and leadership was highlighted by Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, who praised his contributions to the university community. The quick actions of these students prevented further harm and loss of life.

Mohamed Jalloh, the suspected gunman, had a troubling history that included a prior conviction for attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Despite serving time in prison for this offense, he was released in 2024. Jalloh’s past interactions with ISIS affiliates and his involvement in planning potential attacks raised concerns about his intentions.

During the incident at Old Dominion University, Jalloh reportedly entered a classroom, asked if it was an ROTC class, and proceeded to target the instructor. Witnesses claimed he shouted “Allah Akbar” during the attack, further indicating a potential terrorist motive. The swift response from law enforcement and ROTC students prevented further tragedy on the campus.

Students at the university described the chaos and fear that gripped the campus during the shooting. Despite the harrowing experience, many commended the university’s response and communication throughout the crisis. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day and the following day as authorities continued their investigation and ensured the safety of the campus community.
