Russia and Ukraine ‘on the verge’ of deal to end war, deputy foreign minister says

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine may soon see a diplomatic resolution, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Ryabkov expressed optimism about reaching a peace deal to end Moscow’s war, stating that both parties are “on the verge” of a breakthrough.

Ryabkov emphasized that Russia is ready to make a deal and hopes for a swift resolution. Meanwhile, U.S. officials indicated that significant progress has been made in resolving key issues between the two nations, with about 90% of the concerns addressed.

However, there are still obstacles to overcome, particularly regarding Russia’s demands for control over Crimea and other territories in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected any territorial concessions to Russia, complicating the negotiation process.

In addition to territorial disputes, the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine post-war remains a contentious issue. Ryabkov stated that Russia adamantly opposes any NATO presence on Ukrainian soil, even under the guise of a security guarantee or as part of a coalition force.

Despite the challenges, Moscow and Kyiv are collaborating with American mediators on a peace initiative to end the conflict that began in February 2022. Ryabkov, a prominent figure in Russia’s Foreign Ministry, refrained from referring to the invasion as a war, instead labeling it a “special military operation.”

The Russian government justifies its actions as necessary to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine. When questioned about the suffering of civilians, Ryabkov expressed sympathy while asserting Russia’s objective to ensure the well-being of affected individuals.

Ryabkov has also highlighted the importance of nuclear and arms control agreements in U.S.-Russian relations. He emphasized the need for substantial improvements in Washington’s approach to Russia before progress can be made in these areas.

Looking ahead, Ryabkov did not rule out the possibility of a meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as peace talks continue. As negotiations evolve, diplomatic efforts will play a crucial role in resolving the conflict and securing lasting peace in the region.
