Russia launches 136 drones into Ukraine ahead of expected Trump announcement
In a recent development, Russia launched four missiles and 136 drones into Ukraine overnight, as reported by Ukraine’s air force. This attack comes after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would provide Kyiv with additional Patriot surface-to-air systems to bolster its defense against Russian assaults.
According to Ukraine’s air force, out of the 136 drones deployed by Russia, 108 were either shot down or neutralized during the attack. The remaining 28 drones impacted various locations, leading to falling debris in four different areas. On the other hand, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have downed 11 Ukrainian drones in the same timeframe.
Despite criticism from President Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin persists in launching long-range bombardments on Ukrainian cities. Trump, who has been advocating for a ceasefire and peace deal, has yet to achieve a breakthrough in resolving the ongoing conflict.
Trump announced plans to provide Ukraine with more sophisticated military equipment to aid in their defense. He mentioned that the U.S. would send various pieces of advanced military gear to Kyiv, with the expectation that Ukraine would cover the costs. Additionally, Trump hinted at the possibility of sending Patriot missiles to Ukraine, emphasizing the country’s need for protection.
The Patriot surface-to-air missile system has proven to be crucial in Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression since the full-scale invasion commenced in 2022. The system has been instrumental in intercepting drones, ballistic missiles, and enemy aircraft. Currently, Ukraine operates at least six Patriot systems, two of which were supplied by the U.S. and the rest by NATO allies.
While Trump refrained from disclosing any new sanctions against Russia, there are discussions about imposing tariffs on countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia. Senator Lindsey Graham revealed that Trump is prepared to implement a Senate bill that could levy tariffs of up to 500% on such transactions.
In a show of support, Trump’s Russia-Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv to engage in diplomatic efforts. Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, expressed gratitude for the U.S.’s commitment to peace through strength.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to escalate, it remains to be seen how diplomatic efforts and military support will shape the outcome of the conflict. The international community closely monitors developments in the region as efforts are made to bring about a peaceful resolution.
