Russia outlaws Amnesty International in latest crackdown on dissent and activists

Amnesty International has been declared an “undesirable organization” by the Russian authorities, making it a criminal offense to be involved with the group. This decision, announced by the Russian Prosecutor General’s office, is part of a broader crackdown on critics, journalists, and activists following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The designation requires Amnesty International to cease all operations in Russia, with individuals who collaborate with or support the organization facing prosecution. Currently, Russia’s list of “undesirable organizations” includes 223 entities, including independent news outlets and human rights groups.

Founded in 1961, Amnesty International is known for documenting human rights abuses worldwide and advocating for the release of unjustly detained individuals. The organization has issued reports on Russia’s actions in Ukraine, alleging crimes against humanity, and has condemned the Kremlin’s crackdown on dissent.

In their statement, the Prosecutor General’s office accused Amnesty International of pursuing “Russophobic projects” and activities that seek to isolate Russia politically and economically. Amnesty International has not yet responded to this development.
