Russia scales down celebrations honoring its navy as Ukraine launches more drone attacks
To scale down the Navy Day celebrations, Russia cited security concerns due to ongoing Ukrainian drone attacks, causing cancellations of parades in St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, and Vladivostok. This decision was made as Russian air defenses intercepted 99 Ukrainian drones in multiple regions, with additional drones shot down near St. Petersburg. The threat of drones also led to flight suspensions at Pulkovo airport.
During a visit to St. Petersburg, President Putin emphasized the need to enhance the navy’s capabilities in response to the evolving security landscape. The recent history of Ukraine’s successful drone attacks on Russian warships and airbases has heightened Moscow’s concerns, prompting a strategic shift in naval operations.
The audacious “Spiderweb” attack by Ukraine, targeting Russian airbases hosting long-range bombers, dealt a significant blow to Moscow’s military assets. This incident underscored Ukraine’s ability to disrupt Russian operations and boost morale among its forces.
As the conflict continues, Russia maintains its offensive against Ukraine, with drone and missile strikes causing casualties and damage in various regions. The ongoing violence highlights the escalating tensions and challenges faced by both countries.
