Russian court extends jailing of teen singer over performance of anti-war songs

An 18-year-old street singer, Diana Loginova, known as Naoko from the band Stoptime, has had her jail sentence extended by a Russian court for performing anti-war songs. This action, condemned by human rights activists, is part of a wider crackdown on free speech in light of the conflict in Ukraine.

Loginova was charged with violating public order during her performance in October and has been held in custody since her arrest on October 15. This recent extension marks her third consecutive sentence. She was also fined for allegedly discrediting the Russian armed forces.

Her bandmate, Alexander Orlov, has also faced repeated sentences along with her, despite denying any wrongdoing. Amnesty International has criticized these “carousel arrests” as a tactic to keep them detained without more serious charges.

The Stoptime band members have been targeted for performing songs critical of the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, with their performances garnering online attention. Human rights activists have called for their release, citing their right to freedom of expression.

In response to the crackdown on dissent, several performers in Russia have been arrested and fined for similar acts of protest. The government’s actions have led to a wave of repression targeting various groups and individuals.
