Russian official threatens Zelenskyy as Moscow claims Kyiv attacked Putin residence

A recent incident has escalated tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Russian officials accusing Ukraine of launching a drone attack on one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s official residences. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that the alleged attack took place in the Novgorod region on December 29, but provided no evidence to support this claim. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy quickly dismissed the accusation as Russian disinformation.

In response to the alleged attack, Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president and prime minister now serving on the country’s Security Council, issued personal threats against Zelenskyy. He accused Zelenskyy of trying to sabotage the ongoing peace talks and suggested that the Ukrainian president should be “exhibited” in St. Petersburg after his “imminent demise.”

Despite the lack of evidence supporting the drone attack allegation, the Kremlin informed U.S. President Donald Trump about the incident during a phone call with Putin. Russian officials also warned of retaliatory strikes in Ukraine. Trump expressed surprise and anger at the alleged attack, stating that he had been informed by Putin but was unsure if it actually occurred.

Zelenskyy rejected the Russian reports of the supposed drone attack as “yet another lie.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also denied the accusations, stating that Russia had not provided any plausible evidence of the attack.

The ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine may be impacted by these latest developments. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that Russia’s negotiating position would harden in response to the alleged attack, describing it as an attempt to disrupt Trump’s efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Despite the escalating tensions, both sides have expressed a commitment to continue the negotiation process. Lavrov confirmed that Russia does not intend to withdraw from the talks, but warned that retaliatory strikes had been planned. Ukraine reported that Russia launched missiles and drones into the country, resulting in casualties and damage.

The situation remains tense as both countries navigate the aftermath of the alleged drone attack and prepare for potential retaliatory actions. The international community will be closely monitoring the situation as efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution continue.
