Russia’s ‘massive strike’ on Ukraine overnight kills 1, injures 24, Ukrainian authorities say
In a devastating overnight attack, Russia unleashed a massive strike on Ukraine, deploying 537 drones and 45 missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Despite the air defense systems managing to intercept most of the projectiles, five missiles and 24 drones managed to hit seven locations, causing significant damage and casualties.
The region of Zaporizhzhia bore the brunt of the assault, with one person reported killed and 24 others injured, including three children. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration confirmed that more than 40 houses and 14 apartment buildings were damaged, leaving 25,000 households without power. The neighboring region of Dnipropetrovsk also suffered damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure as a result of the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for tough measures against those supporting the Russian army and calling for effective sanctions against Moscow. He expressed disappointment in Russia’s failure to engage in diplomatic efforts and urged the U.S., Europe, and the international community to take decisive action.
In response to the Russian aggression, Ukrainian forces retaliated by targeting two Russian oil refineries – the Krasnodar Refinery in Krasnodar Krai and the Syzran Refinery in the Samara Oblast. The outcomes of these strikes are still being assessed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
While the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down 86 Ukrainian drones, they did not confirm any attacks on oil refineries. The situation remains tense, with both sides engaged in escalating military actions.
President Zelenskyy reiterated the urgency of imposing strong sanctions on Russia and called for global support in ending the conflict. The ongoing attacks underscore the need for a swift resolution to the crisis, as civilian casualties continue to mount.
As the world watches the situation unfold, the international community must take collective action to bring an end to the violence and restore peace in the region. The stakes are high, and the time for decisive intervention is now.
