Salma Hayek-Debut ‘Midaq Alley’ Gets Sony Re-Release in Mexico, LatAm
Sony Pictures International Productions and Alameda Films have come together to re-release the iconic Mexican film “Midaq Alley” across Mexico and Latin America. The 1995 gem, directed by Jorge Fons, is a significant piece of Mexican cinema that catapulted Salma Hayek’s career to international stardom. The announcement of the re-release coincides with the film’s 30th anniversary and the closing of the Classics section at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Naguib Mahfouz and with a screenplay by Vicente Leñero, “Midaq Alley” is a tale set in a bustling Mexico City backstreet where the lives of its inhabitants are intricately intertwined. The film is divided into four parts, each focusing on a different character’s perspective of the same events unfolding in the alley.
Daniel Birman Ripstein, grandson of legendary producer Alfredo Ripstein, expressed his excitement about bringing “Midaq Alley” back to theaters in a newly restored 4K version. The restoration process took four years to complete, ensuring that audiences experience the film in a way never before seen. Sony Pictures Releasing México’s VP, Philip Alexander, shared his enthusiasm for being a part of this cinematic milestone.
Aside from Hayek’s breakout role, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast of renowned Mexican actors including Bruno Bichir, Daniel Giménez Cacho, and María Rojo. The theatrical release of “Midaq Alley” is set for October 23, with Sony handling distribution in Mexico and Latin America.
