Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled cucumbers sickens dozens across 18 states

Recently, nearly 50 individuals in 18 states have fallen ill with salmonella food poisoning linked to recalled cucumbers, as reported by federal health officials. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 16 people have been hospitalized due to this expanding outbreak. The cucumbers in question, grown by Bedner Growers Inc., are no longer available for purchase but were previously sold at three Bedner’s Farm Fresh Markets locations in Florida and distributed to various stores, restaurants, and other establishments in multiple states through Fresh Start Produce Inc. between April 29 and May 19.

It is worth noting that Bedner Growers Inc. was also identified as one of the probable sources of a salmonella outbreak in 2024 that affected 551 individuals across 34 states, as per the CDC. As a precautionary measure, the CDC advises individuals to dispose of any cucumbers at home if their origin is unknown and to clean any surfaces or items that may have come in contact with the cucumbers with hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a list of businesses that sold the recalled cucumbers, including in salads, salsa, and sushi. TGD Cuts, LLC, a Maryland-based company, has voluntarily recalled certain products containing cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc., such as packages of sliced and speared cucumbers and certain salsas. These items were distributed to retail and foodservice locations in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and North Carolina with “use by” dates ranging from May 20 to May 28. Although no illnesses have been reported from these products and they are no longer expected to be on shelves, the full list of recalled items can be found on the FDA’s website.

Salmonella infection typically presents with symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with onset occurring 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. While most individuals recover within a week without medical intervention, vulnerable populations, such as young children, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe illnesses that require hospitalization. If you experience persistent diarrhea, high fever, vomiting, or signs of dehydration, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
