Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Hands On: Exciting, Yet Flawed
The debut of the first mainstream folding phone left a lasting impression, and now, seven years later, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is making waves in the market once again. This innovative device takes folding technology to the next level with its unique tri-folding mechanism, transforming from a standard smartphone into a 10-inch tablet with ease.
During a hands-on experience at CES 2026, the Galaxy Z TriFold showcased its impressive design and functionality. The device is surprisingly lightweight at 309g, making it easy to handle without feeling flimsy. When unfolded, it boasts a slim profile of just 3.9mm, comparable to some of the thinnest smartphones and tablets on the market. The tri-fold design allows for a seamless transition between smartphone and tablet modes, offering a versatile user experience.
The external 6.5-inch AMOLED display on the Galaxy Z TriFold delivers sharp detail, vibrant colors, and decent contrast, while the internal 10-inch AMOLED panel provides an immersive viewing experience. Despite the presence of creases on the internal display due to the folding mechanism, they are not distracting during use. However, the lack of support for Samsung’s S Pen stylus and the device’s propensity for fingerprint smudges are minor drawbacks to consider.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z TriFold is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, delivering smooth performance and seamless multitasking capabilities. The device features a high-quality camera setup, including a 200MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP telephoto sensor for versatile photography options.
On the software front, the Galaxy Z TriFold runs on Android with Samsung’s One UI 8 overlay, offering a familiar user experience with added functionality for the large internal display. Multi-tasking is a breeze with the ability to run three apps side by side and utilize features like Samsung DeX for a desktop-like experience. The device also includes intuitive features like a warning message for closing the panels in the correct sequence to prevent damage.
While the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold impresses with its design, performance, and software capabilities, its limited availability is a significant drawback. Currently exclusive to South Korea, with a planned US launch in Q1 2026, the device’s availability in other regions remains uncertain. Despite this, the Galaxy Z TriFold stands out as a futuristic smartphone that pushes the boundaries of technology and innovation.
