San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s security detail attacked in bloody skirmish
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police security team was attacked Thursday evening near the edge of the Tenderloin, resulting in chaos and a violent street confrontation. The incident left one officer bleeding from the back of his head after a struggle with a suspect.
The mayor himself was unharmed during the altercation, which occurred just before 6 p.m. near Cedar Street, as reported by Mission Local. The incident unfolded when three individuals allegedly blocked the mayor’s black SUV in the street. Lurie, accompanied by a police officer and a driver who was also a cop, approached the group and asked them to move.
Initially, the trio seemed cooperative, but the situation escalated when one man began speaking incoherently. When the officer intervened and instructed the man to leave, the suspect initially complied before suddenly attacking the officer. A scuffle ensued, leading to the officer falling backward and hitting his head on the pavement.
Meanwhile, the mayor’s driver, who was also a police officer, was dealing with another individual at the scene. Thankfully, this officer did not appear to sustain any injuries. The role of a third person mentioned by police remains unclear.
The suspected attacker was swiftly apprehended and taken into custody, while a second suspect attempted to flee but was captured by law enforcement nearby. Over a dozen officers quickly arrived at the scene, surrounding the suspects as they were handcuffed.
The aftermath of the incident left Lurie visibly shaken. Although he declined to provide further details, he confirmed that the men had attempted to fight a police officer.
In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department confirmed that two men were arrested in the area of Cedar and Polk streets. Two officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation.
Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, commended the officers for their swift and courageous response in protecting the mayor during a dangerous situation. He wished the injured officer a speedy recovery and praised all involved for their bravery and decisive actions.
