San Francisco mayor under fire for response to attack on bodyguard
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is facing backlash for his seemingly indifferent response to an assault on a member of his security detail, as the attacker behind the brutal body slam has a troubling history. The incident occurred near the troubled Tenderloin neighborhood, where San Francisco police apprehended two suspects, Tony Phillips and Abraham Simon, after a violent altercation.
In a video obtained by Mission Local, Mayor Lurie can be seen standing with his hands in his pockets, watching as a fight breaks out involving his security team. As the scuffle escalates, Lurie is observed walking away from the chaotic scene, leaving many to question his actions during the incident.
Critics took to social media to express their disapproval of Mayor Lurie’s response, with some calling him a coward for not intervening to help his security team member. A source familiar with the incident later clarified that the mayor was walking away to fetch another member of the detail for backup, providing some context to his actions.
The attacker, Tony Phillips, had a previous run-in with the law in 2019 when he was detained on suspicion of murder for allegedly stabbing a man to death in a fight in the Polk Gulch neighborhood. However, the case was dismissed due to a lack of evidence by then-District Attorney George Gascon, as reported by the San Francisco Examiner.
The Thursday incident began when Mayor Lurie asked individuals blocking the street to move, leading to a confrontation with one man who began behaving erratically. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in a physical altercation between the officer and the suspect, culminating in the officer being slammed to the ground.
Phillips was arrested at the scene and exhibited aggressive behavior towards the officers during the arrest. The second suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by law enforcement.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by public officials and their security details in maintaining order and safety in urban environments. Mayor Lurie’s response to the incident has sparked a debate on leadership styles and the role of elected officials in crisis situations.
