Scale of Russia-Ukraine drone strikes builds ahead of possible ceasefire talks
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated once again, with both sides engaging in a series of major drone strikes overnight. These strikes come as the two countries prepare for potential ceasefire talks later this week.
The Defense Ministry of Russia reported that its forces had shot down 107 Ukrainian drones in seven regions, including 28 drones over the Moscow region. This was followed by a wave of Ukrainian attacks, during which the Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down 221 drones, the highest daily total since June 6.
The attacks have caused disruptions at major airports in Russia, with temporary flight restrictions imposed at several airports, including those in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. Meanwhile, Ukraine reported that Russia launched 426 strike and decoy drones, as well as 24 missiles, into the country overnight. The Ukrainian air force claimed to have intercepted or suppressed all drones and missiles.
The attacks have resulted in casualties and damage in both countries. In Kyiv, explosions have led to one death and several injuries, with residential buildings, supermarkets, and other facilities being damaged. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for an increase in defensive and offensive drone capabilities to target Russian sites.
Both Russia and Ukraine have been escalating their drone attacks in recent months. Russia has launched thousands of drones and missiles into Ukraine, while Ukraine has also increased its drone attacks into Russia. Zelenskyy has called for new talks with Russia to achieve a ceasefire and end the conflict.
In response to calls for a ceasefire, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is willing to work towards a peaceful resolution but emphasized the need for continued efforts and negotiations. He also hinted at a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump in the future.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue to engage in military actions, but there is hope that negotiations could lead to a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and urging both parties to work towards a ceasefire.
