Scotland’s welcome for Trump to feature golf resorts, trade talks and protests

President Trump is set to arrive in Scotland on Friday for what the White House is calling a “working visit” to his two luxury golf resorts, Trump International in Aberdeenshire and Trump Turnberry in Ayrshire. During his visit, he plans to meet with Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, who publicly supported Kamala Harris’ presidential bid against Mr. Trump last year.

Despite his Scottish roots through his mother, who was born on the Scottish island of Lewis, Mr. Trump can expect protests during his visit. The Stop Trump Scotland protest group has been organizing demonstrations in Aberdeen and Edinburgh as part of a “Festival of Resistance” against his policies.

Security concerns are also high, with a senior Scottish police official acknowledging the importance of considering the previous assassination attempt against Mr. Trump. During his 2018 visit, over 5,000 police officers were deployed, with the U.K. Treasury contributing £5 million to cover the costs.

While the visit is private, Mr. Trump is expected to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss issues such as the 25% tariffs on British steel imports. Starmer hopes to lower the tariffs to support the U.K.’s steel industry, which has seen a significant decline in output.

The meeting will also focus on refining the U.S.-U.K. trade deal brokered in May. Mr. Trump is scheduled to return to the U.K. for a second official state visit in September to meet with King Charles III. Starmer delivered the invitation for this visit during his previous meeting with Mr. Trump at the White House in February.

As a CBS News foreign correspondent based in London, I will continue to cover the developments of President Trump’s visit to Scotland and the discussions with Prime Minister Starmer. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
