Sean Astin Elected President of SAG-AFTRA, Succeeding Fran Drescher

Sean Astin, best known for his roles in iconic films such as “Rudy,” “Goonies,” and “The Lord of the Rings,” was elected as the new president of SAG-AFTRA on Friday, succeeding Fran Drescher. Astin, who was part of a unity ticket called “The Coalition,” which included members from various factions within the union, received 79% of the vote, defeating Chuck Slavin.

In his statement following the election, Astin expressed his excitement for the opportunity to lead the organization during this challenging time and emphasized the importance of optimism and creativity moving forward. His victory was met with disappointment from Slavin, who described the outcome as a result of a political machine representing the powerful Hollywood elite.

Astin’s involvement in SAG-AFTRA politics spans over six years, and he has previously served on the negotiating committee during the actors’ strike in 2023. His late mother, Patty Duke, also held the position of president of the Screen Actors Guild, making Astin’s election a continuation of the family legacy.

During the pandemic, Astin dedicated countless hours to attending Zoom committee meetings, showcasing his commitment to the organization and attention to detail. He expressed his focus on the mechanics of the process and his belief that his leadership will be beneficial for the union.

In addition to Astin’s election, Joely Fisher was chosen as the new president of the Los Angeles local, succeeding Drescher, who led the union through the 2023 negotiations and helped bridge internal divides within the organization. Drescher’s legacy includes advocating for a fund to distribute residuals to performers on streaming shows, a move aimed at spreading wealth more broadly within the industry.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers congratulated Astin on his victory and expressed their readiness to collaborate with him on addressing important issues for SAG-AFTRA performers. The union is set to return to the negotiating table with the AMPTP in 2026, with Astin emphasizing the importance of approaching negotiations with an open mind and a resolve to uphold the dignity and needs of union members.
