Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial day 29 recap: Jurors watch videos of ‘freak-offs’
The trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as the Manhattan jury was shown explicit videos allegedly used to blackmail women. These videos, depicting drug-fueled sex parties, are central to the prosecution’s case against the former rap mogul and fashion icon.
The jury, wearing headphones and shielded from public view, watched lengthy clips of the orgies where Combs reportedly watched his girlfriends engage in sexual activities with male prostitutes. This marked the first extensive look at the key evidence in the trial, which has lasted seven weeks.
Prosecutors argue that Combs produced and saved these videos as a means of potentially blackmailing the women to ensure their silence. One of Combs’ ex-girlfriends, Cassie Ventura, testified that he threatened to release the videos, causing her to fear for her career and family. Ventura described the act as “horrible and disgusting.”
However, Combs’ defense team argues that the videos show women participating voluntarily in the sex parties, refuting the prosecution’s claims of coercion. Defense attorney Teny Geragos emphasized that the recordings demonstrate consensual sexual conduct, not coercion.
The videos themselves are under seal due to their sensitive nature, and only the jury and involved parties have been allowed to view them. News organizations, including ABC News, sought access to describe the content of the tapes, but the judge denied their request.
Combs has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted on all counts, he could face life in prison. As the prosecution nears the end of its case, they plan to call two more witnesses before resting on Friday. The defense intends to present a brief case to support their argument that the sex parties were consensual and that Combs did not engage in sex trafficking.
In a separate development, the judge issued a stern warning to lawyers on both sides for allegedly violating the gag order in the case. He threatened to sanction the attorneys and investigate the matter further to identify the responsible party.
As the trial continues, prosecutors seek to bolster their evidence of a criminal enterprise orchestrated by Combs. Testimony from a U.S. Homeland Security Investigations agent revealed how Combs used his business empire to fund lavish expenses, including charges related to the sex parties. Text messages were also presented showing efforts to suppress incriminating video footage.
With the defense planning to present a short case following the prosecution’s testimony, the trial is expected to conclude soon. Closing statements could be delivered as early as next week, pending the completion of the defense’s case. As the legal proceedings progress, the fate of Sean “Diddy” Combs hangs in the balance.
