Sean Manaea delivers a dud in first part of Mets’ piggyback plan

Clay Holmes and Sean Manaea were the dynamic duo on the mound for the Mets in their recent game against the Nationals, but their performance was a tale of two halves. While Holmes aced his part of the equation with a stellar relief appearance, Manaea struggled in his start, giving up all three runs in the Mets’ 3-2 loss at Citi Field.

Manaea had a shaky three-inning outing, allowing four hits, including a two-run homer by Nasim Nuñez in the second inning. Manager Carlos Mendoza noted that Manaea’s fastball had good life but lacked elevation, leading to the Nationals capitalizing on pitches in the strike zone. This performance was a step back for Manaea, who has been disappointing this season with a 5.59 ERA after returning from an injury.

On the other hand, Holmes, in his first relief appearance of the season, pitched 3 ²/₃ scoreless innings behind Manaea. It was a strong showing for Holmes, who was able to get his sinker working and induce ground balls from hitters. This performance tied the longest relief appearance of Holmes’ career, showcasing his versatility on the mound.

Looking ahead, Mendoza has not announced the starting rotation beyond Tuesday, when David Peterson is set to start against the Cubs. However, it is likely that the Holmes/Manaea combination will be utilized in the final regular-season series in Miami. With the Mets still in the hunt for a wild-card spot, the team will rely on these two pitchers to deliver when it matters most.

Holmes emphasized the importance of staying focused and playing their best to make something special happen in the remaining games. Despite the pressure of the playoff race, Holmes and Manaea are ready to leave it all on the field and give their all for the team’s postseason aspirations. It remains to be seen how these pitchers will fare in the crucial games ahead, but their determination and skill will be key factors in the Mets’ playoff push.
