See how often flights have been delayed at major airports during the government shutdown
The ongoing government shutdown is taking its toll on air travel, with data showing an increase in flight delays as air traffic controllers face a shortage. This trend is expected to continue as federal officials plan to reduce travel by 10% at 40 airports starting Friday.
According to a CBS News analysis of data from aviation company Cirium, nearly a quarter of flights arrived late into 16 of America’s busiest airports in the week after air traffic controllers missed their first paycheck on Oct. 28. This is compared to 18% of flights arriving late in September. The list of airports affected by the 10% cut in air traffic includes major hubs like Las Vegas and Charlotte.
Delays have been particularly significant in some areas, such as New York City, where staffing shortages and adverse weather conditions have led to fewer than 65% of flights arriving on time from Oct. 28 to Monday. In September, over 81% of flights landed on time at the area’s three airports. On the other hand, airports in Seattle and Denver have seen more on-time arrivals and departures compared to September.
While the percentage of flights arriving or departing on time did not drop significantly in the early weeks of the shutdown, many airports experienced their worst days last week. More air traffic controllers have been opting to take on second jobs to make up for lost pay, leading to staffing issues and an increase in ground delays or stops issued by the FAA.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the tough decisions faced by air traffic controllers during the shutdown on CBS News’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.” He warned of potential mass flight delays, cancellations, and airspace closures if the shutdown continues. Travelers can stay informed about delays or closures at airports by checking the FAA’s advisories.
In conclusion, the impact of the government shutdown on air travel is becoming more pronounced as air traffic controllers grapple with financial uncertainty. The potential for increased delays and cancellations underscores the need for a resolution to the shutdown to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel.
