‘Seinfeld’ Producer and Director Was 86
Tom Cherones, a renowned director and producer best known for his work on the iconic sitcom “Seinfeld,” passed away at the age of 86 on January 5 at his home in Florence, Oregon, after battling Alzheimer’s disease. Cherones played a pivotal role in shaping the visual language of “Seinfeld,” directing 81 of the show’s first 86 episodes during its first five years.
His directorial debut on “Seinfeld” was with the episode titled “The Stakeout,” which aired in May 1990. Cherones was known for his distinctive style, often wearing Hawaiian shirts on set. He brought a cinematic quality to the show by shooting multi-camera in a way that stood out from the traditional sitcom aesthetic. Some of his most notable episodes include “The Chinese Restaurant,” “The Parking Garage,” and “The Contest.”
Cherones received critical acclaim for his work on “Seinfeld,” earning six Emmy nominations and winning a DGA Award and Golden Globe for his contributions to the show. In 1993, he shared the prestigious Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series with creators Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, among others.
Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on September 11, 1939, Cherones graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in journalism before serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He later earned a master’s degree in broadcast and film communications from the University of Alabama. Cherones began his career in television at various PBS affiliates before moving to Los Angeles, where he worked on shows like “General Hospital” and “Welcome Back, Kotter.”
In addition to his work on “Seinfeld,” Cherones produced and directed a variety of programs for major networks and production companies. He taught television production at the University of Alabama for 12 years and was dedicated to mentoring the next generation of filmmakers.
Cherones was married twice and is survived by his wife, Carol E. Richards, his daughter Susan Cherones Lee, son Scott Cherones, and grandchildren Jessa and Thomas Cherones. He leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking television and a lasting impact on the industry.
