Senate Democrats to force vote aimed at blocking Trump’s tariffs on Brazil
Washington — The Senate is set to vote on Tuesday evening on a measure aimed at blocking President Trump’s tariffs on Brazil, as Democrats seek bipartisan support to challenge the administration’s actions. Led by Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, the resolution seeks to terminate the national emergency declared by the administration, which has resulted in the imposition of 50% tariffs on goods from Brazil.
Senator Kaine has criticized the emergency declaration as “unusual and extreme,” suggesting that it was motivated by the president’s personal interests rather than national security concerns. The emergency was declared during the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted and sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup in 2022.
In response to the emergency declaration, President Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, granting him the authority to impose tariffs without congressional approval. Senator Kaine and his colleagues are seeking to challenge this move through a vote in the Senate, which requires a simple majority to pass.
While the effort in the Senate is largely symbolic, it reflects a growing discontent among lawmakers over the president’s use of tariffs as a negotiating tool. Earlier this year, a similar measure aimed at blocking tariffs on Canada received bipartisan support, with several Republicans crossing party lines to oppose the tariffs.
Senator Kaine has indicated that he plans to introduce additional resolutions targeting tariffs on other countries in the coming days, as part of a broader effort to push back against the administration’s trade policies. He emphasized that these votes are not just about tariffs but also about the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches.
Republican support for the measure remains uncertain, with Vice President JD Vance meeting with Senate Republicans to discuss the issue. While some Republicans have expressed concerns about the economic impact of tariffs, others view them as a necessary tool to protect American workers and industries.
Senator Kaine believes that bipartisan opposition to the president’s policies can influence his decision-making, prompting him to reconsider his approach to trade and tariffs. By challenging the administration’s actions in Congress, lawmakers hope to assert their constitutional authority and ensure a more balanced approach to trade policy.
